Since 1996, the Generation YW Program has provided evidence-based prevention services for 11-17 year old youth that focus on improving a young person’s overall physical, intellectual, social and emotional well-being. We aim to interrupt the onset or progression of substance abuse, as well as implement the early detection of other problem behaviors that could be detrimental in the future of our youth.
Curriculum-Based Education/Skills Training Classes for Middle and High School Girls & Boys
In supporting the mission of the YWCA, Generation YW Program targets predominately females, many of whom are referred by school counselors and parent support specialists at their respective schools in the Austin Independent School District(AISD). The evidence-based in-school classes are currently held at three middle school campuses and one high school campus upon invitation by Communities in Schools or school personnel to implement programming to meet student needs that were not being addressed due to limited resources. Staff routinely provide critical referrals to other community resources for enrolled teens, of which close to 100% follow through with the referrals every year.
Tobacco Prevention Presentations
Generation YW staff conduct presentations throughout the community that raise awareness of alcohol and other drug use, abuse and addiction and its harmful effects and consequences on individuals, families, and communities. The presentations also inform the public about alcohol and other drug programs and services available in the community. The youth prevention presentations also focus critical information on alcohol (underage drinking), marijuana, and prescription drugs.
Alcohol/Drug Prevention Activities at Community Festivals and Health Fairs
Gen YW staff also organize special activities and events that focus on preventing or reducing substance use/abuse or tobacco use and encourage and foster bonding with peers, family, and the community. These activities are substance-free, age-appropriate, and teach or reinforce skills that promote a healthy and substance-free lifestyle. Look for our activity tables at local community festivals and health fairs!
